Mary, eine verwöhnte reiche Amerikanerin, besucht mit ihrem Sekretär Bondy einen Balkanstaat, um sich dort ein Königsschloss zu kaufen. Dessen Besitzer, Prinz Sandor, gibt sich als sein eigener Sekretär aus und verkauft sein Schloss, um bitter benötigte Devisen für sein Land aufzutreiben. Als Mary seine wahre Identität erfährt, schreibt sie ihrem Vater, sie werde nicht nur das Schloss, sondern auch den Prinzen kaufen.

Bondy hat sich inzwischen mit der temperamentvollen Prinzessin Rosemarie, der Cousine des Prinzen, angefreundet. Mary wird zur „Herzogin von Chicago" ernannt und erwartet eine Erklärung des Prinzen, aber dieser, verletzt durch das Schreiben Marys an ihren Vater, gibt seine Verlobung mit Rosemarie bekannt. Diese jedoch hat inzwischen Gefallen an Bondy gefunden. In einem kurzen, glücklichen Finale finden sich die „richtigen" Paare.

SYNOPSIS: Pontevedrian embassy, Paris, 1905. The Ambassador, Baron Zeta, is desperate that the wealthy widow Hanna Glavari marry a Pontevedrian man so that her fortune remains in the country. He attempts to match her and his handsome attaché, Danilo. It turns out that Danilo and Hanna had had a love affair in years past. Nevertheless, Danilo now refuses to love her because he doesn't want it to look like he just loves her money. In the end, after Hanna reveals that she will loose the money if she remarries, Danilo joyously asks for her hand in marriage. Quickly, she informs him that she will loose her money – because she will give it to her new husband.
